U19 Tournament useful in the long run for the coaching staff

2019.02.10. 15:12 |
For the second year in row the U19 national team played in a tournament during the February international break. This year the team played with mixed results, but overall there were a number of positives for the coaching staff to draw from for next season.

Hungary-Norway 2-4
In the tournament opening game Máté Sági started in net with Lajos Gönczi serving as the backup goalie. The game stayed scoreless until there was about five minutes left in the period when Alex Kovács scored on a power play goal.
The score remained unchanged to almost the midway point of the game when Sebestyén Kovács found the back of the net to double the lead. With under two minutes left to play in the second period when Norway scored two quick goals to tie the game up at 2-2 The score remained the same until Bence Dézsi scored, which would end up being the game winner. Late in the game Dézsi struck again as Hungary picked up the two goal win against the Scandinavian country. Dézsi, Alex Kovács and Kristóf Rácz all finished with two points each.

Hungary-France 3-8
For the second game of the tournament the coaching staff gave Lajos Gönczi the start in net with Levente Márkus as the backup. France started the game up with goal in the first minute of play. Later in the period France doubled their lead with a power play goal. France would pull away in the first period with another two goals to open up a 4-0 lead after 20 minutes. In the second period France added another power play goal followed up with two even strength goals. Hungary got on the scoreboard in the early third period on a goal by Botond Fekete to make it 7-1. On the next shift France went back up by seven goals  nine seconds later. Late in the game Hungary scored twice 31 seconds apart when Richárd Galántai and Bence Páterka both scored.

Austria-Hungary 3-2 OT
For the third game Levente Márkus was between the pipes for the game. After a scoreless opening period Austria scored in in the 34th minute on a penalty shot to take a 1-0 lead. The scoring picked up in the third period as Alex Kovács tied the game up at 1-1. Later in the period Bence Dézsi gave Hungary their first lead of the game, but less than a minute later Austria tied the game up at 2-2. In overtime Austria scored 15 seconds in to take two out of the three points.

Márton Vas, head coach: We played up and down throughout the tournament, we worked hard in the first game against a good Norway team. In the second game we might have believed that we can be successful without working hard, this is way the game got away from us in the first period. In the third game we got back onto the right path, we worked hard we had our work boots and work helmuts on and got back on the path that we wanted to see from the team. We had the lead and Austria and to fight to get back into the game. Playing Austria has something extra in it, both teams wanted to win and it was a good game, it had a nice pace and both goalies played well at the start of the game. We got a chance to see who can adapt to the situations that we face, we have somewhat a different system than what most players play in their clubs, we had a chance to see who can make the adjustments and can concentrate and play attention to the details. There were some players who we had positive feedback on and we are ready to what comes up next for us. Since everyone was in the system this past season and we had kept tabs on them during the season there were no real surprises since we were familiar with what they can do. The question now is who took advantage of having an opportunity to prove what they can do. There were multiple players who are moving in the right direction to make spot for themselves in the future.
