The Hungarian Ice Hockey Federation and senior national team head coach Jarmo Tolvanen have to come to terms on a new contract, as the FInnish coach has signed a one year extension with an addition option year as well.

Tolvanen took over the Hungarian national team at the start of the 2017-18 season. Under his leadership Hungary just missed out on winning promotion to the A-Pool at least years Division 1/A World Championships in Budapest.

“The major thing was absolutely the good feeling I had, when working with enthusiastic Hungarian hockey people. There are great plans for the future, there are lots of changes going on, you can really see and feel the progress in Hungarian hockey, but in the end of the day the people. players, coaches, leaders, fans etc. was the major factor. Obviously one year, coaching any team, is a short time, and I felt that I could give more now when I have more experience about  Hungarian hockey.” said Tolvanen.

According to the 62 year old coach this coming season will not be easier than the last one, however a foundation has been set. “  We don't need to start the upcoming season from the scratch, but it will definitely not be easier. Last season we took a step forward, but to take the next one will be for sure a challenge. Although I have a good feeling about the future. We have potential to improve our game, we have more top prospects in the international level and we know that  World's top-16 level is getting closer.” stated the head coach.

Jarmo Tolvanen hopes to build a good relationship with coaches who are coaching in Hungary since the basis and the foundation of the national team program really starts with the clubs. “Obviously the process of improving the game of National Team is one of my main tasks and there I hope to find good ways to work with Hungarian club coaches. All the basic work will be made in the clubs  and to improve the game and players with common principles is crucial. For the smallish hockey nation like Hungary, we need everybody to take the next step. The way we finished last season was painful, but at the same time we proved that our performance was at its best on high enough level. Consistency will be the key and our biggest challenge for the next season. Looking forward to see the team in Kazan to play for the medals again.”
