With the coaching staff rotating the players, Márk Miskolczi, Gergő Nagy, Scott Macaulay and Zsombor Garát got back into the lineup. Not playing was, defencemen Márk Szaller and Tamás Láday, neither were forwards András Benk, Tamás Sárpátki, Áron Reisz and István Terbócs. Miklós Rajna started in net today with Bence Kiss serving as the backup goalie. Team captain was Gergő Nagy with Márk Miskolczi and Zsombor Garát serving as the assistant captains.
Both teams came out of the gate flying and had early shots on net. Italy head an early power play but they were not able to score. Minutes later Hungary had their first power play of the game, they rotated the puck well but did not get any solid shots on net. The pace of the game did not slow down as the period continued with both teams holding the puck in the offensive end. Hungary had power play late in the period but again the two minutes came and went without a Hungarian goal.
In the opening minute of the second period Hungary had a great scoring chance when Gergő Nagy centered the puck to Attila Németh right in front of the net but the puck did not cross the goal line. On the next shift Hungary pepper the Italian goalie with shots but none of the shots made it past the goalie. Hungary had the first power play of the second period but again no goal was scored. Italy had scoring chances as the period went on but Rajna kept the puck out of the net. Later in the period Hungary was pinned in their own end for minutes but survived without letting a goal in. Late in the period Szita had a shot that went off the goalies glove and dropped in just behind the net. Hungary killed back to back penalties to close out the period.
The third period started like the second ended, with a Hungarian penalty. This was followed up by a Hungarian power play, with neither team scoring on their advantage the game remained scoreless. Towards the middle of the period it looked as if Hungary took control the game as the were able to stay in the Italian end of the ice for minutes at a time. Later in the period Italy turned the puck over in the neutral zone, Hungary skated in on a 2 on 1 but the goalie stopped Becze’s shot. The pace of the game did not slow down as both teams were gunning for their first goal of the game. With the game ending a scoreless draw the two teams went to overtime. In the extra session Hungary controlled the puck but Italy scored on their only shot off of a screan for the win.
