Head coach Pat Cortina accomplished with the women’s team what we already did with the men’s team over ten years ago, which was taking Hungary to the A-Pool.

Before the game was even played Hungary had already won qualification to the A-Pool. As Norway had lost to Denmark. With the pressure off for qualifying to the A-Pool, the only goal left for Hungary was to pick up the gold medal.

Anikó Németh got the start in net, Fruzsina Mayer was also back in the lineup. It did not take long for Hungary to take the lead as Gasparics rifled a goal in the first minute if play. Minutes later the game was being played at 4 on 4. This was better for Austria as Meixner skated in on a breakaway and put the puck past Németh for the goal. Both teams had power plays throughout the rest of the period, but the score remained unchanged.

The second period started off much like the first. The first penalty of the second period was not called until half of it was over. Hungary was not able to score during the two minutes. Neither team had any real scoring chances throughout the period. Late in the period Kiss-Simon wrapped the puck around the net but the puck stayed out of the net.

In the third period both teams were hunting for the winning goal. Hungary started to look like the stronger team as the period went on. Just before the midway point of the third period Gasparics  had a breakaway but the goalie made the save as the puck came out Bernadett Németh put the puck into the empty net for the power play goal. With less than two minutes left in the game Hungary picked up a penalty, Austria called time out and pulled the goalie to make it 6 on 4.
