Hungary comes from behind to defeat Belarus

After opening the tournament with a loss to Slovenia, Hungary defeated Belarus by the score of 5-3 in a game in which three players scored their first national team goals.

Jarmo Tolvanen and his coaching staff made some changes to the lineup. Bence Kiss made his first start in the national net with Miklos Rajna serving as the backup. After having six players making their national team debuts against Slovenia four players pulled on the national team jersey for the first time today: Ákos Mihály, Patrik Kiss, Dávid Jászai and Patrik Imre. Not playing today will be Gergő Nagy, Tamás Sárpátki, Márk Miskolczi, Zsombor Garát and Scott Macaulay. The captain was András Benk with Áron Reisz and István Terbócs as the assistant captains.

After the opening minutes Hungary kept the puck in the offensive end of the ice. The first real scoring chance of the game came on a wrap around from Tihamér Becze who beat the goalie but a defender got his stick to the goal line in time to make the save. Donat Szita crashed the net on the following rush but could not beat the goalie. Belarus scored first when Voronov took a pass off of a faceoff and one timed it past Kiss for the score. Hungary had a handful of shots on net during their first power play of the game but did not score.

The second period started off with a Hungary killing the remaining time on a penalty. On their second penalty of the game István Terbócs tied the game up when he put his own rebound in. Hungary soon after had another power play but were not able to create much on the man advantage. Belarus took back the lead on a power play when Gretsky had shot from the right faceoff dot. Minutes later Tihamér Becze skated into the Belarus zone, took a shot that ended up behind the goalie to make it 2-2.

The third period started off with time remaining on a Hungarian power play from the second period. Belarus took back the the lead with a power play goal that slipped through the legs of Bence Kiss. The penalties kept on being called as Hungary had another power play, this time they took advantage of it as Ákos Mihály made a cross ice pass to Patrik Kiss who onetimed it into the open net. Hungary took their lead of the game after Belarus gave the puck away behind their net, Attila Németh jumped on the loose puck and shot it past the goalie to make it 4-3. Minutes later Tamás Láday scored when his long shot was redirected off of a Belarusian player to make it 5-3.
