Gyergyói HK Preview

2018.08.29. 10:18 |
After being away for eight seasons Gyergyó is back in the ERSTE Liga and they look to put on a better showing than the last time they were competing in the league.

Under the new name of Gyergyói HK and new ownership, the club is committed to being competitive in the league and making a serious run at the league title.

For the new season Gyergó has a new coach in Alexander Trofimov, who was still an active player only four seasons ago, last year he was an assistant coach in the VHL. Helping him out will be Vitali Donika and Csaba Gál.

The number one goalie will be Stepan Goryachevskikh the former Belarusian national team goalie who played in a couple of A-Pool World Championships. Gellért Ruczuj will be his backup who joined Gyergyó in the offseason from Csíkszereda. Ruczuj has years of starting experience in the ERSTE Liga.

On defence the team will be relying on their imports to career the team. They have two veterans with years of KHL experience in Denis Yezhov and Alexi Vasilchenko. The rest of the backline also have a mix of veteran experience and youth. Attila Goga and Csaba Nagy are two local players that the younger defenders can look up to and learn from. Szilárd Orbán is a younger player to keep an eye on, he should get a lt of playing time and should round out the top five defenders.

Up front the scoring should be carried by the import players. The Gyergó management turned to former KHL players here as well. Dmitri Pestunov and Pavel Vorobyev not only have played at a high level but both of them won multiple titles in Russia and have championship winning experience. Former Russian national team player Alexei Simakov and Kiril Yelagin are expected to find the back of the net often. Robert Péter is a veteran player who the club picked up from Brasov and Csaba Daradics was a point per match player in Romania last year. Robert Timaru is a young player who if he is on y line with the right players could have a big season. Gyergyó will need to get quality production from some of the younger players such as Mircea Constantin, Hunor Csergő and Kain Lázár if the team wants to have three solid lines that they can send out onto the ice and be competitive against the better teams in the ERSTE Liga.

Gyergyó has the chance to make a deep playoff run, however the question will be their depth, especially up front. They will not be able to rely on their imports to score the goals game in and game out. The younger players will need to step up and grow if the team wants to compete for the title.
