Ferencváros to Celebrate with a Derby

Ferencváros will be celebrating the 90th anniversary of their hockey team on October 19th with a game against in the Tüskecsarnok.

The Hungarian Ice Hockey Federation was founded in 1927 a year later on October 28th 1928 Ferencvárosi TC founded their ice hockey team, Béla Mailing was the club president with Itsván Huber as the manager.

Fradi played their first official game on February 18th, 1929 and in December of 1931 they played their first international game which was a 6-1 win over Deutsche Eishockey. The club would regularly play international games, they won the Hircsák Cup. WIth the Gergely brothers the team had players on the Hungarian national team who played in the World Championships and the Olympics. League play started in 1937 and the team brought in a Canadian coach in Stapleford as a player coach.

The club had to wait until 1951 to win their first championship title which was the foundation for future success. The club would win 25 titles which is the second most in Hungarian team sports history, right behind the soccer team. The team has also won 14 Hungarian Cup titles, during the 1973-74 season the team had a deep run in the European Cup as they defeated German side Füssen. This team also provided players that were key members of the Hungarian national team.

According to the club the summer of 2018 brought a number of big changes for the team. The team had a new naming rights sponsor as the team will be playing under the name FTC-Telekom and former Ferencváros player Szabolcs Fodor was named the new head coach, Fodor represented Hungary in over 50 international games. With the new coach there were a number of new players brought in and new mentality around the club.

The organization has decided to celebrate this jubilee with a derby against arch rivals UTE in the Tüskecsarnok. The game will be played on Monday October 29th at 20:00 and will be aired on M4 Sport.

Gábor Hudák, technical director, FTC-Telekom: We would like to celebrate the 90th anniversary correctly, this is why we decided to play the game at the Tüskecsarnok, lucky we were also able to take on UTE. I hope that it will be a sold out game, with a great atmosphere.

Szabolcs Fodor, head coach, FTC-Telekom: We are continually preparing throughout the season for the important games. We can not look too far ahead for this game, of course it is in the back of our minds we know important of a game this is. This is an important derby for us and this is extra importance for us with it also being an anniversary for the club. We will not be playing on our own regular home ice but if we can play in front of a large Fradi crowd that will help us.
