Balázs Sebők and KalPa won the 92nd Spengler Cup in Davos Switzerland as they defeated Canada in a shootout 2-1.

KalPa won their group as they beat Metallurg Magnitogorsk and Trinec, in the semi finals they met up with host team Davos who they beat before getting past Canada. In the four games that KalPa played three of the were one goal games with two of those game being decided after regulation.

“We didn’t really know what to expect a couple of players who had been here in the past said that it will be a great time. This is what ended up happening, we came here, won some games and ended up winning the entire tournament. We have not had the best start to this season but hopefully this tournament win will put us in the right direction.” said Sebők about the tournament.

Sebők was not the only person with Hungarian connections at the tournament as current Vasas mentor coach and former Hungarian national team coach Diego Scandella was the video coach for Canada. “I did not have a chance to talk to Diego but after our game he wrote a congratulatory message to me. Unfortunately I did not have a  chance to see him since we were both playing games.”

We also had a chance to talk to Sebők about he felt the tournament went for him and what he expects in the second half of the season. “Honestly I don’t think I played well in the first game, I played better in the second game. Today was a hard game but we played last night at 8:30 and we did not get to bed until about 01:00 in the morning but at 10:00 we were already facing off for the finals. This first half of the season was kind of quite for me but hopefully things will improve, the chances are there I just need to score on them. I hope the statistics will also be better. Right now I am happy to be the Spengler Cup champion.”

Sebők continued saying. “I think that I really needed this tournament win I have not had too much positive happen personally and for the team this season. This will only help us in the season, everyone has better seasons and then a bit slower of seasons, right now a couple of smaller injuries have slowed me down. I try to look at the positive and now hopefully statistically the second half of the season will be better.”
