This past week in the ERSTE Liga there were a number of surprising scores which proved that this is a balanced season. Because of this there were a number of players that were up for player of the week, however there was one that was consistent during the two wins that UTE had and did not hurt his team with penalties, thats why this week’s Player of the Week is Benjámin Nemes.

UTE defeated the Vienna Capitals and had an exciting tight win against Debrecen in the Monday night TV game. This season Nemes is off to a hot start as he has six goals and three assists in nine games. The Budapest born forward played his youth hockey for MAC and then for the Budapest Stars before going out to Slovakia and then played three seasons in Sweden for Djurgardens. In Sweden he was teammates with current NHL players Mika Zibanejad, Fredrik Claesson, Erik Gustafsson and Pontus Åberg. He came back to Budapest for one season and played for the Patriots in the MHL where he was teammates with Ádám Vay, Karol Csányi, Ádám Fekti and Richárd Hardi. Nemes would go on to play two seasons in the EBEL for Fehérvár before joining UTE during the 2015 offseason.

Nemes represented Hungary at the U18 and U20 World Championships and made his senior national team debut during the 2013-14 season and has played a total of nine games for the national team.

UTE took six out of six points this past week, what was the key to the success?
I think that it was important for us that we were able to get some time off and rest, and also get things squared away. We also were missing some players. We needed this extra time.

What is the environment like in the locker room and within the team?
It is better than last season, we are a true team and not just a selection of individual players. It is better than in the past, the entire team is moving in the same direction.

You are not a young player anymore but you are not even near being a grizzled veteran either, where do you see yourself in the league and in the team as well?
I feel that I am still on the young side at the age of 25 and I still have a lot to learn.

You played in Sweden during your junior years in Djurgardens, what is something that you learned out there that helped you as a player?
I think the office practices and the time spent in the gym is at a higher level than here. Getting ready physically was high at that time. I went there when I was 16 which is the age when you really want to start working in the gym. When the season was over around March and in early April we were already working on getting ready for the next season. I think this was the biggest difference when I was there. We also played more games and there were more quality teams in the league.

What is the goal that UTE has for the season?
For the players who were here last season and the new players have the goal to win the league this season. There are about six teams in the league that have a real chance to win everything this year. I think this is the normal mentality, which is to win the championship.

What is your personal goals for the season, you have started off this season well?
I want to continue playing well and to play as much as I can and to have more responsibilities within the team. I would also like to get an opportunity to play in the national team as well.
