Hungary falls to Austria in World Championship opener

Hungary opened the U18 World Championships in Székesfehérvár against a very strong Austrian. Hungary looked strong early but in the ned Austria took the game by the score of 3-1.

Head coach Bence Svasznek gave Dominik Horváth the start in net with Roland Farkas serving as the backup goalie. In the second minute of play Levente Keresztes broke in on net but he was brought down illegally, Hungary was unable to convert on the power play that followed. The two teams exchanged shots throughout the period. Hungary was shorthanded for the first time when they were called for having too many men on the ice. Austria took advantage of this when Lindner scored a laser of a shot from high in the slot. Austria kept on picking up penalties throughout the rest first period but Hungary was not able to take advantage of these chances.

In the second period Hungary picked up another penalty but Dominik Horváth was on the spot to keep the game at one goal. Later in the period Milán Horváth had an excellent chance with Schlekmann also having a shot on target. Austria had their chances in the period as well but it was a power play goal that gave them a 2-0 lead when Tim Harnisch found the back of the net. The rest of the period was filled with penalties for both side, in the closing minutes Kristóf Rétfalvi picked up a 2+10 for a hot to the head.

Hungary started the third period off by successfully killing the penalty. Hungary had a chance against to cut it to a one goal game however Hungary again was not able to score on the power play. After a series of penalties the game was played at 4 on 3 for the advantage of Austria. When the game when baco to 5 on 4 Austria made it 3-0 thanks a score by Thimo Nickl. Hungary quickly answered back when Ádám Falus put a rebound in to get Hungary back within two goals. Hungary tried to tie the game up but in the closing minutes another penalty put an end to the come back.
