Hungary beats Poland in a shootout

After playing a close game in the first preparation game against Sweden, Hungary took on Poland in Miskolc. In Hungary came back in the third period to force overtime, in the ned Hungary won in a shootout.

Head coach Jarmo Tolvanen gave Miklós Rajna the start in net with Bence Bálizs serving as the backup goalie. Not playing were goalies Ádám Vay and Zoltán Hetényi forwards János Hári and István Bartalis with defenceman Dániel Kiss also missing the game. The captain for the game was Bálint Magosi with János Vas and Bence Szirányi as the assistant captains.

The opening minutes of the game was balanced as both teams were able to take the puck deep into the attacking end but no real scoring chances were created. Poland had the first power play of the game, but Hungary was able to kill the penalty. As the period went on both teams had shots on net but none of the shots went through. Late in the period Hungary had another penalty against them, this time Poland was able to create some traffic in front of the Hungarian net, but Rajna stopped all of the shots despite not having his stick for part of the two minutes. In the closing minutes Sarauer and Erdély had chances, but the puck did not cross the goal line.

Hungary started the second period off flying as the were able to keep the puck in the offensive end for minutes at a time. Poland also was able to create chances as the period went on. On their first power play of the game Hungary managed to get decent shots on net but the score remained 0-0. Late in the period Michel's crashes the net and put a centering pass on net that slipped through Rajna for the first goal of the game. In the final minute of play both teams picked up penalties for roughing as the game was played on 4 on 4.

Neither team managed to score with less players on the ice. Minutes later Hungary tied the game up on the power play when Bence Stipsicz put a shot on net from the blueline that made it through traffic and behind the goalie. Poland followed this up with a power play of their own but the Hungarian penalty kill was on the spot. As the period reached the midway point Hungary started to put pressure on Poland. Poland called timeout at this point to relieve the pressure. Late in the game both teams had scoring chances but the score remained deadlocked. Hungary had a late power play that they were not able to set up on. This was followed soon after by another Poland penalty, Kevin Wehrs hit the post. With the score tied at 1-1 the game went to overtime.

During the first minutes of overtime Hungary controlled the game as Wehrs and Sarauer had shots on net. Hungary had a penalty late in overtime, but Poland was unable to score on it.

In the shootout the first shooter for Poland was unable to score with Sofron scoring on his chance. In the second round Poland missed with Vas score on his shot. In the third round both teams missed, in the fourth Poland missed and the game was over as Hungary picked up the win.
