“We Hungarian players might not ever know how truly lucky we are”

Hungarian national team defenceman Zsombor Garát talked openly about this past season and what he expects from the upcoming one as well.

You are pretty young player yourself, but what was it like to work with little kids as you helped them to shoot the puck on net?
It felt great and this day is a great opportunity to show what our sport is really about. Luckily there were a large number of kids that came and tried our sport.

This was a very long season for you as you closed out the season with the men's senior team, how would you rate your season both personally and at the club level?
It was a tough season from start to finish, both myself and my team did not play the way we would have liked during the season. When I came back home I was fortunate enough to make the senior national team but in Kiev we were not able to perform the way we had wanted to. I have to be positive as I am a young player however I have been playing hockey for 15 years now and I know that not every season will turn out perfectly. This are the ones that we can learn from to become a better player both on and off the ice.

A month has passed since the Division 1/A Word Championships, looking back what were you able to take away from the tournament?
I would say we were better prepared a year ago in Russia when we played in the A-Pool. This year I felt that when we made the trip out to Kiev we were not mentally prepared. Hungarian hockey has gotten to the point where we have players that not only can get the national team up to the A-Pool but are capable enough to keep them there as well. We have more and more players playing in top leagues throughout the world such as in the SHL, the Liiga or the DEL. We do not have a problem with individual skilled players and as a team we can play very well. We just need to all be on the same page, maybe this is all that is missing.

The offseason preparations are around the corner, how have the past weeks been for you and what do you have planned for next season?
I took some time off but now I am doing my off ice conditioning, which might be the most uninteresting part of the season. As for where I will be next season, I have not decided on that yet.

What is the most important aspect in choosing a team for next season?
I would like to play outside of Hungary while I am still young. I have spent the past three seasons in the U.S., I would like to look around in Europe as well and to gain experience that could help me become a better player. I also know how strong the MOL League is as well, and how much the level of hockey has gone up.

The World Championships next season will be in Budapest next year, what did you think when you heard the news?
I was very happy, regardless of if you are 12 years old or an adult it is always a great feeling to pull on the national team jersey. On top of this it is even greater to pull it on infront of a home crowd. We Hungarian players might not ever know how truly lucky we are. We have never played for another national team so we don't know how much more support we get than other teams. Just look at the last game we played in Kiev against Kazakhstan and how much fan support there was. This will be great motivation when we play in the László Papp Sports Arena.
