Slovenia gets past Hungary

After splitting the first  two games of the tournament with a loss to Kazakhstan and a win over Italy, Hungary took on a familiar foe in Slovenia.

HUNGARY-Slovenia 1-4

For the game head coach Jarmo Tolvanen made some changes to the line. Csanád Erdély was moved to play with János Hári and Balázs Sebők. Vilmos Galló and István Sofron will be on the wings of Andrew Sarauer. János Vas is centering Gergő Nagy and Bálint Magosi, András Benk took the place of Erdély on the line with Dániel Kóger and Krisztián Nagy. Chris Bodó will be the 13th forward. The defencemen pairings stayed the same. Ádám Vay will get his third start in a row and Miklós Rajna will be the backup goalie.

Slovenia also had a number of players on their team who had played in Hungary during their career. For the opening faceoff Hungary had Sebők, Hári, Sofron, Stipsicz and Pozsgai on the ice.

In the early minutes of the game Hungary had a chance as Sebők dumped the puck into the attacking end, went around the defender and got a shot off that just missed the net. On the ensuing rush Slovenia had a chance as well but Vay made the save. Minutes later Slovenia had a chance from just in front of the net but Vay stoned them. Slovenia ended up taking a 1-0 lead with a shot from the top of the left faceoff circle by Magovac. Later in the period Ticar had backhanded shot that hit the crossbar. Hungary almost tied the game up on a shorthanded chance as Kroselj, the Slovenian goalie came out to play the puck but miss handled it, Sofron missed the open net with a backhanded shot. Hungary unable to score on their first power play of the game. Hungary killed a late penalty in the period but struggled in the offensive end.

In the opening minutes of the second period Arnold Varga had a shot from high in the slot that the goalie pushed aside. Slovenia also had an early chance, but the puck ended up in the glove of Vay. Hári carried the puck into the offensive end and set up Sebők for the shot, but Kroselj made the save. On the first Hungarian power play of the period Sofron had a shot from the right faceoff circle that was pushed out by the goalie. On the next rush Sebők skated in through the Slovenian zone and put the puck through the legs of the goalie to make it 1-1. It didn’t take long for Slovenia to go back up by one goal. After a Hungarian turnover Slovenia scored off of a backdoor pass to make it 2-1. There were two separate occasions later in the period where Sebők kad beat the goalie but was unable to lift it in over the goalie. Magosi had a great one timer chance from the slot but the goalie made the save. Late in the period Slovenia hot the post.

In the third period Hungary tried to put pressure on the Slovenian team, Dániel Kóger had a scoring chance in the opening minutes. The penalty kill was working in the third period, in fact Hungary managed to create scoring chances, first Krisztián Nagy had a shot that the Slovenian goalie had to save. On the next rush Sofron and Szirányi skated in on a two on one but were unable to score after making one too many passes. Later in the period Szirányi set up Hári, who it the post of the wide open net. After killing a penalty late in the game Slovenia brough the puck out on a 4 on 1 and managed to put the puck past Vay to make it 3-1. In the closing minutes Hungary pulled the goalie but in the end Slovenia scored an empty net goal.
