Women’s national team player Dorottya Medgyes talked about her decision to take time away from hockey in the near future.

Medgyes should be getting ready for her third season at the University of North Dakota however the school decided to drop the women’s hockey and leaving her without a team to play for. She had the opportunity transfer to another school however as a foreigner she is not eligible for state funded financial aid.

“Unfortunately hockey is taking a back seat right now in my life, I had opportunities to transfer to other schools, however the best scholarship offer I had was 50% from the University of Maine. The reason I did not go to Harvard was because as a foreigner I am not eligible for FAFSA (state financial aid). North Dakota will honor my scholarship for the final two years.” said Medgyes. “I decided to stay and concentrate on my studies, I don’t know what will happen with my hockey career at this time. I did think about taking online classes but I would not be able to complete my degree in four years.”

Medgyes and the North Dakota coaching staff tried to find her a new school, however nothing came through. “We tried everything, my coaches wrote to every Division 1 program, but all the scholarships had been handed out at least a year in advance. The other girls are a bit luckier because if they could not get a scholarship, they are still eligible for financial aid.”

Medgyes has two school years left to complete her degree in International Business Management from the University of North Dakota.
