Hungary stays fresh on an off day

After the come from behind exhilarating 3-2 win against Italy the Hungarian national team was back on the ice for an off day practice. Since the game against the Italians was so late the coaching staff made the practice optional.

There were only a handful of players of the ice as Miklós Rajna and Dávid Duschek along with András Benk, Zsombor Garát and Bence Stipsicz were put through an ice session. The team will have the rest of the afternoon off and a meeting at the end of day.

We talked to a few players about their off day routines and the reasons for what they did and why. Bence Szirányi was at the rink today but only to get the legs moving but didn’t go onto the ice. “I would have liked to sleep in a bit but I am used to waking up around 8 AM so I was up, after a light breakfast, I came out to the rink to move a bit. It is important from the point of regeneration to get the legs moving. I didn’t feel that I needed to be in the ice today so I just biked. Tomorrow there is a mandatory practice so I will be back on the ice. I just needed to get the blood flowing”

Bence Stipsicz unlike Szirányi decided to go and skate around a bit on the ice. “I was on the ice today because I like to be on the ice, the coaching staff gave us the option of going on the ice and I decided it was a good idea. I feel that I get soft if I am sitting around all day on an off day. We had shooting drills, nothing hard just enough to break a sweat. Like I said I like to be on the ice this is why I started to play hockey. I like to slide around a bit. If I am not on the ice after a day the skates start to press my feet.”

Miklós Rajna explained what he does to stay mentally fresh incase he needs to jump and help out the team. “I had a couple days without playing in a game, which is not ideal but you have to pay attention to keep your form, follow through on the rebounds and concentrate. You never know when you need to jump in and help the team. It is always an honor to be on the national team. During this week it doesn't matter who is the starting goalie but that we are a team and that we can help each other.”
