The Hungarian national team opened up the Division 1/A World Championships with 5-3 win over Ukraine.

Hungary-Ukraine 5-3

Head Coach Rich Chernomaz started Miklós Rajna in net with Bence Bálizs serving as the backup. The game started off with two Ukraine penalties which gave Hungary a two man advantage, however they were unable to take advantage of it, Hungary also killed an early penalty. The first real scoring chance of the game came when Ukraine hit the post, but Rajna was on the spot to cover it up. The first Hungarian scoring chance came when Kalvin Sagert put a shot on net that was redirected by János Hári just past the post. Soon after Vilmos Galló hit the post from the slot, on the ensuing rush Ukraine scored to take a 1-0 lead. Csanád Erdély had a shot go wide with István Bartalis scooping it up and shooting the puck between his legs and past the goalie to score a ridiculous goal and to tie the game up at 1-1.

During the first shift of the second period Hungary took their first lead of the game when János Vas flipped home a rebound off of a Bence Szirányi shot. As the game went on Hungary started to look more and more like the stronger of the two teams. After Hungary killed an early second period penalty they were unable to kill the next one as the puck trickled through as Ukraine scored a power play goal to tie it up at 2-2. Throughout the period the line of Hári, Vas and Galló was working well as they were creating chances. Hári had a shot stuffed from outside of the crease which was followed by a questionable call against Kevin Wehrs. In the last minute of the period Hungary was not able to clear the puck from in front of the net, Ukraine jumped on the chance and banged it home to take a one goal lead into the second intermission.

After the two teams exchanged power plays Hungary tied the game up at 3-3 when Andrew Sarauer capped off a 2 on 1 with a goal. Less than two minutes later Hungary took back the lead when Keegan Dansereau banged home a rebound. In the closing minutes of the game Ukraine put pressure on the Hungarian net to try to tie the game up. In the closing minutes Ukraine pulled their goalie for the extra skater but János Hári scored an empty net goal for the 5-3 win.
