Hungary defeats Mannheim for Billa Cup Title

Hungary-Mannheim 1-0

Head Coach Bence Svasznek decided to give Tamás Monostori the start in net with József Pesti serving as the backup. Both teams came at strong in the first period. The Hungarian team defended well and did not allow a goal, however on the other end they were unable to beat the Mannheim goalie.

In the second period the game continued just like the as it was a real defensive battle, both goalies made key saves to keep the score level. As it was planned Svasznek switched goalies at the midway point of the game with Pesti coming in for Monostori in between the pipes.

The game remained a scoreless draw until just about the midway point of the third period when Márk Schlekmann beat the Mannheim goalie for the goal. Hungary kept the tight defending as in total Hungary went 11 straight periods without letting in a goal. Monostori and Pesti combined for the shutout win.

Bence Svasznek, Head Coach: The tournament was a very well organized event where we had never played before, we faced top Czech and German clubs. Hungarian hockey is at a level now where we can play well against teams like this. We are very happy, the players improved tremendously during the week and we saw on the ice what we asked from them during the tournament. As the tournament went on we played better and better each game.
