Hungary-Italy

Head coach Jarmo Tolvanen and his coaching staff decided to give Dávid Duschek the start in net with Miklós Rajna serving as the backup goalie. Missing from today’s game was Brance Orbán, Péter Vincze, Tamás Pozsgai and Bronson Kovács, Anderw Sarauer was missing because of illness. Mátyás Odnoga made his Hungarian national team debut, also playing was Balázs Láda, Dániel Kiss and Attila Pavuk. János Vas was the team captain with Bálint Magosi and Csanád Erdély wearing the A’s.

The pace of the game was fast early on as both teams were able to set up in the opposing offensive zone. Hungary managed to kill an early power play but still had their momentum going later in the period. Hungary got on the scoreboard as Nilan Nagy took a pass from Csanád Erdély in the corner, came around the net and fed a pass to the crease that Tamás Sárpátki stuffed past Jake Smith for the goal. Later in the period Hungary killed another penalty however they were able to keep the fast pace of the game going.

In the second period Hungary came out with confidence as they were flying around the ice early on. What has become a regular occurrence in the tournament Hungary had an early penalty in the period. Hungary had a power play on which Bodó set up Vas for the one timer, but the shot sailed above the net, Wehrs also had a long shot but the goalie made the save. At the midway point of the game Marchetti plastered Arnold Varga onto the boards, for the misconduct the Italian received 2+10 minutes. The closest Hungary got to scoring on the power play was Chris Bodó crashing the net. Later in the period Italy tied the game up with a power play goal, a Zanatta shot was redirected in front of the net to make it 1-1. Late in the period Bence Stipsicz broke out Karcsi Csányi who skated in on the left wing but his shot hit the side of the goal, the game remained tied 1-1. In the final minute of the period, Dániel Kiss had a one timer that Smith blocked.

Early in the third period Csanád Erdély brought the puck in, split the defenders and got a shot off that Smith saved, Sárpátki was on the spot with the follow up off the rebound. Hungary went up 2-1 when István Sofron jumped on a loose puck near the blueline, got past the defenders, faked out the netminder and flipped the puck into the empty net. Just as Hungary killed a penalty Dániel Szabó skated in on a breakaway but was unable to get the puck over the goalies blocker. Hungary opened up a 3-1 lead on a power play goal when Bálint Magosi fed Nikandrosz Galanisz the puck to banged it home from the slot. Hungary kept on fighting and they defended well? Dávid Duschek stood tall has he stopped the Italian rush. In the closing minutes Márk Miskolczi had a breakaway opportunity and he did not disappoint as he put the puck past the goalie for the 4-1 win. Márk Miskolczi, forward: We had some tired periods during the game, overall we played well but we made mistakes. The coaching staff asked us to pay attention to this during the first period, in the second and third periods we did this. At the end the Italians were pressing, and after a turnover I just skated in and put the puck past the goalies.

Tamás Sárpátki, forward: You can say I was at the right place at the right time, there was a scramble in the corner, Nagy came out of it with the puck, went abound the goal and centered it, I was waiting for it. It was a bit strange playing with these guys, I had played with Csanád in the past but with Matyi we had good chemistry.

Dávid Duschek, goalie: I really had fun during this game, I am glad that the team and the staff had confidence in me. At the start the Italians kept us under pressure but we were able to play well. Our penalty kill really worked well, after we had a great chance on practise with all the penalties. I am happy that we won and that I was able to help the team.

Mátyás Odnoga, forward: I was very nervous before the game and during the game as well. However the guys were great helping me relax, everyone was positive. I did make mistakes that I usually don’t make with my club. I am waiting for some rookie initiation, I am sure it will happen.
