Fehérvár and MAC to battle for the Super Cup

2018.09.09. 08:00 |

For the first time since 2014 two teams will be battling for the Hungarian Super Cup as Hungarian champions and Extraliga team MAC Újbuda will be host EBEL side Fehérvár AV19 for the trophy.

In February of 2014 the Dunaújvárosi Acélbikák and Fehérvár AV19 faced off against each other in a two game series to find out who was the best team in Hungary, ultimately Fehérvár took home the Cup.  There are number of players from that Super Cup winning side that will be playing on both teams up who will be playing today. Current MAC players Miklós Rajna and Tamás Pozsgai along with MAC assistant coach Viktor Tokaji were with Fehérvár back then along with current Fehérvár forwards Csanád Erdély, Andrew Sarauer and Tamás Sárpátki.

This game is basically the final game for both teams before their respective seasons start. MAC Újbuda will be starting a new chapter in the clubs history as the moved to the Slovak Extraliga with Fehéráv playing in the Austrian based EBEL.

Both teams had some injuries during the preseason,  MAC defenseman Cameron Burt was not able to dress for all of the preseason games. Mátyás Odnoga just played his first preseason game earlier this week against Novy Zámky.

During the Gábor Ocskay Jr. memorial tournament Fehérvár was unable to dress a number of players because of injuries, Andrew Sarauer, Ryan Glen, Eric Meland and Timotej Sille missed both games last weekend.

It will be interesting to see who both coaching staffs will mix and match the younger players with the veterans in the forward lines and the defensive pairings. MAC has two quality goalies who could start, MAC head coach Gergely Majoross could go with either Miklós Rajna or Bence Bálizs, however the goalies might split the game. Mac Carruth is the number one option in net for Fehérvár, however head coach Hannu Jarvenpaa could decided to give Dániel Kornakker the start to keep Carruth fresh for the start of the season.

The Super Cup will be played in the Tüskecsarnok in Budapest at 20:00 tonight.
